Two years of illegal war against Ukraine

Image
It is now two years that Russia tried to invade Ukraine and started an illegal war against its people. Russia has attacked hospitals, homes, destroyed the city of Mariopol, murdered the people of Bucha, attacked food storage in Odesa, destroyed the Kakhovka Dam to use it as a weapon of war... Yet Putin survives, yet the Kremlin's rule continues...  Russia invaded the neighbor country Ukraine and remains with impunity seating at the UN Security Council and other UN functions... pulling strings in the global economy...   I still have hope that the good people will win and there will be justice, but it is crazy that it is taking so long. It is not acceptable that a country illegally invades another, kills, rapes, destroys, ignores all human rights and remains with impunity... in the XXI century. The world cannot allow this, it is too barbaric!

An open letter to Mr. Elon Musk

Background

A couple of months ago I wanted to write to Mr. Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and current owner of Twitter. Of course Twitter does not enable direct messages to Elon Musk, so here is what I want to say, in the form of an open letter. Of course, if I was writing to him directly I would identify myself properly, which I am not doing here, still I am writing my own opinions.

The letter

Dear Mr. Musk,

Greetings. Let me begin by thanking you for your contributions to the development of electric vehicles, battery technology and solar home systems, as these are crucial technologies for the planet's sustainable future.

About me. I am a middle age woman from Europe. I was studying in the US in 9/11/2001 during the Twin Towers terrorist attack. Like many others, I watched in shock through live TV as the drama unfolded. In my view, violent and deadly attacks against civilians were intolerable then, and are intolerable now.

Reason to write this letter. The reason why I am writing to you is because of the use of Twitter by the Russian State to spread and to amplify falsehoods and hate speech against the people of Ukraine, trying to justify Russia's illegal war of aggression against Ukraine and to manipulate public opinion in its favour.

Russia is a terrorist State. Under the so called "Russia's special military operation", Russia has been committing many acts of terrorism against the Ukrainian people, including the bombing of residential apartment buildings, hospitals, schools and water supply systems, including the destruction of entire cities. Russia is clearly the perpetrator of these large-scale terrorist attacks.

Using disinformation as weapon

The United Nations are clear on how hate speech has been used throughout history to justify and incite atrocity crimes, including by Adolph Hitler's Nazi regime, before and during the holocaust. Here is a relevant webpage in this regard. Similarly, Russia's disinformation campaign aims to dehumanize Ukrainians and to justify and encourage the atrocities being committed by the Russian Army and its mercenaries. Russian propaganda has been active for many years, as this article published in 2016 illustrates.

I am very concerned with Twitter's role and complacency in Russia's disinformation campaign against Ukrainians. This article by the BBC illustrates how Kremlin accounts are manipulating Twitter.

An appeal

Dear Mr. Musk, I am sure that you yourself have been a victim of hate speech, most likely through campaigns sponsored and instigated by fossil fuel companies. There are times when being neutral does not make sense - neutrality is like a second aggression to the victims, be it of hate speech or of terrorism.

With this I ask you to please reconsider reintroducing Twitter's checks and balances to avoid its manipulation by State Media, and particularly by the Russian State given that it is leading a war of aggression in an otherwise peaceful neighbor country, committing atrocity crimes in large-scale. You have the power to make real change happen.

Thank you for considering.

Best regards,

CitizenPower4Peace
